A .net is chosen for two reasons in practice: by companies that run infrastructure themselves — an internet provider, a network operator, a hosting firm — and by organisations whose name is already taken on .com. The second group is the larger one, and that is the honest description of this extension.

There are no registration conditions. The address is familiar enough that it needs no explanation, but on its own it says little about what you do. If you want an extension that names your trade, look elsewhere.
