Count on 4 GB as the minimum. That is what Hypixel Studios states in the server manual, and it is enough for a handful of players without mods.

Above ten players, or as soon as you run mods, move to 6 to 8 GB. Large public servers sit at 10 GB or more. View distance (MaxViewRadius) matters more than the player count: every step up loads quadratically more chunks.

Guideline per player count

Assumes the default view distance of 12 chunks. Running higher? Add a step. Hytale mods run on the server, so they count towards memory.

What else the server needs

Memory is one of four things that count. These come from the official server manual or follow directly from it.

Java 25

The server is a Java program (HytaleServer.jar plus Assets.zip) and requires Java 25. It runs on x64 and arm64, on Linux, Windows and macOS. Our servers ship with Java 25 ready.

One fast CPU core

Like Minecraft, Hytale does its heaviest work on a single thread. A high clock speed helps more than many cores. Our Hytale servers run on AMD Ryzen.

UDP port 5520

Hytale speaks QUIC, which runs over UDP, not TCP. A firewall that only allows TCP keeps players out. On our servers the port is open at delivery.

Storage: plan for 20 GB

The install itself is a few gigabytes; a busy 5,000 by 5,000 block world passes 600 MB. Our plans come with 25 GB NVMe.

Bandwidth per player

A player exploring fast pulls a few megabits per second at the default view distance; at 480 blocks that grows to 6 to 10 Mbit/s. Fine on fibre at home, not on an upload-starved line.

Keeping up with updates

Hytale ships an update every two to six weeks and the network protocol changes with it (Update 6 moved to hytale/3). Server and client must run the same version.

Three things that often go wrong

01

More RAM does not make a slow server faster

RAM decides how much world and how many players the server can hold at once. If your server stutters while memory is not full, the CPU is maxed out and only a lower view distance or fewer mods will help.

02

View distance is the biggest lever

MaxViewRadius defaults to 12 chunks. Seeing twice as far means four times as many chunks in memory and in world generation. Lower it before you buy a bigger plan.

03

Mods run on the server

Hytale players download nothing: plugins and asset packs run server-side and are sent to the client. Every mod costs server memory, even if nobody uses it.

When you do not need to rent anything

A guide that only points at the checkout is wrong. These are the cases where a server at home or the built-in multiplayer is enough.

You play now and then with two or three friends

Then hosting from the game works. Since Update 6 Hytale uses STUN and TURN to get friends through your router without external tools. Only double NAT does not work yet.

You have fibre at home and a PC that is on anyway

Install Java 25, start HytaleServer.jar and open UDP 5520 on your router. Keep in mind that the PC has to stay on, your own IP address is visible and you handle the updates yourself.

Cannot get friends connected at home? Read why Hytale complains about your network configuration and what to do about it.

You are reading this on our site, so here is the honest version: our Hytale plans run from 4 to 10 GB and follow the table above. Java 25, the server files and the open UDP port are ready at delivery.

  • 4, 6, 8 or 10 GB of memory on AMD Ryzen
  • 25 GB NVMe storage and two CPU cores per server
  • Pterodactyl panel with console, file manager and SFTP
  • Hosted in the Netherlands on our own network (AS211588)

Without mods, 6 GB is enough for ten players at the default view distance. With mods or a higher view distance, take 8 GB.

Yes, for a small group without mods. 4 GB is the official minimum from the server manual. Once you run mods or pass five players you will feel the limit.

Java 25. The server starts with java -jar HytaleServer.jar --assets ../Assets.zip. On our servers you do not install Java yourself.

UDP 5520 by default. Hytale uses QUIC, so a TCP rule in your firewall or router does not help.

No. Lag with free memory is almost always the CPU: one core that no longer keeps up with the tick. Lower the view distance or the number of mods; only buy more memory once it is actually full.

Plan for 20 GB for the install, the assets and a world that grows. A heavily played 5,000 by 5,000 block world passes 600 MB; our plans come with 25 GB NVMe.

Yes. You upgrade to a bigger plan without moving your world or settings.
